Mar 27, 2018 By holding Ctrl key, we can open any office applications in 'Safe mode'. For some reason, I do not want my clients to open any of the office applications in safe mode. Safe Documents is a feature in Microsoft 365 E5 or Microsoft 365 E5 Security that uses Microsoft Defender for Endpoint to scan documents and files that are opened in Protected View or Application Guard for Office.

What do you need to know before you begin?

Safe Documents is available only to users with Microsoft 365 E5 or Microsoft 365 E5 Security licenses. These licenses are not included in Microsoft Defender for Office 365 plans.
Safe Documents is supported in Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise (formerly known as Office 365 ProPlus) version 2004 or later.
You open the Microsoft 365 Defender portal at https://security.microsoft.com. To go directly to the Safe Attachments page, use https://security.microsoft.com/safeattachmentv2.
To connect to Exchange Online PowerShell, see Connect to Exchange Online PowerShell.
You need permissions in Exchange Online before you can do the procedures in this article:
- To configure Safe Documents settings, you need to be a member of the Organization Management or Security Administrator role groups.
- For read-only access to Safe Documents settings, you need to be a member of the Global Reader or Security Reader role groups.

Note
- Adding users to the corresponding Azure Active Directory role in the Microsoft 365 admin center gives users the required permissions and permissions for other features in Microsoft 365. For more information, see About admin roles.
- The View-Only Organization Management role group in Exchange Online also gives read-only access to the feature.

How does Microsoft handle your data?

To keep you protected, Safe Documents sends files to the Microsoft Defender for Endpoint cloud for analysis. Details on how Microsoft Defender for Endpoint handles your data can be found here: Microsoft Defender for Endpoint data storage and privacy.

Files sent by Safe Documents are not retained in Defender beyond the time needed for analysis (typically, less than 24 hours).

Use the Microsoft 365 Defender to configure Safe Documents

Open the Microsoft 365 Defender portal and go to Email & Collaboration > Policies & Rules > Threat policies > Safe Attachments in the Policies section.
On the Safe Attachments page, click Global settings.
In the Global settings fly out that appears, configure the following settings:
- Turn on Safe Documents for Office clients: Move the toggle to the right to turn on the feature: .
- Allow people to click through Protected View even if Safe Documents identified the file as malicious: We recommend that you leave this option turned off (leave the toggle to the left: ).
When you're finished, click Save.

Use Exchange Online PowerShell to configure Safe Documents

Use the following syntax:

The EnableSafeDocs parameter enables or disables Safe Documents for the entire organization.
The AllowSafeDocsOpen parameter allows or prevents users from leaving Protected View (that is, opening the document) if the document has been identified as malicious.

This example enables Safe Documents for the entire organization, and prevents users from opening documents that have been identified as malicious from Protected View.

How do I know this worked?

To verify that you've enabled and configured Safe Documents, do any of the following steps:

In the Microsoft 365 Defender portal, go to Email & Collaboration > Policies & Rules > Threat policies > Safe Attachments in the Policies section > Global settings, and verify the Turn on Safe Documents for Office clients and Allow people to click through Protected View even if Safe Documents identifies the file as malicious settings.
Run the following command in Exchange Online PowerShell and verify the property values:
The following files are available to test Safe Documents protection. These documents are similar to the EICAR.TXT file for testing anti-malware and anti-virus solutions. The files are not harmful, but they will trigger Safe Documents protection.

Safe mode can be defined as a start-up operation mode for Operating System execution, which is also available for Windows system or the software associated with it. It is also available for the MS Outlook application and other Office suite applications. Safe mode allows applications to get recovered automatically combating errors which occur while startup. The errors include issues with certain add-in or damages in the registry settings. Safe mode will allow Outlook application to detect issues and will try to identify the root cause for offering a solution it or will completely avoid it.

What does running Outlook in safe mode do?

But sometimes users want to open the Outlook application explicitly. Many users often want to start an Outlook application in safe mode in two situations: one is that the Outlook application is not opening properly or if a user wants to open it avoiding loading of any allied add-ins or customized toolbars.

Methods to Start Outlook in Safe Mode

Procedure to start Outlook application in safe mode can be different for different versions of Windows Operating Systems. Some of the methods have been explained below which can be utilized to run Outlook in safe mode.

Microsoft Office 2013 Safe Mode

Method 1: Open Outlook.exe

Windows Vista/Windows 7:

Users belonging to these Windows versions, visit Start menu.
Type cmd and hit Enter which will open a Command Prompt.
Type outlook.exe /safe and hit Enter.
Microsoft Outlook will be automatically launched in safe mode.

Windows 8:

In Windows 8, when you start typing the search box is automatically shown. So simply open Start Screen. Type; outlook.exe /safe and press Enter.

Method 2: Using CTRL Key

In general, one can also hold the CTRL key and click MS Outlook shortcut kit. This will help Outlook to detect that you want to start the application in Safe mode and will throw a message asking the same. Click Yes to proceed with opening Outlook application in safe mode.

Method 3: Visit Outlook.exe Directly

In case while searching for outlook.exe, your system is unable to find it. You can navigate directly to the full location by visiting C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice followed by an Outlook version number.

How to Create Shortcut for Outlook Safe Mode?

A new shortcut can be created manually to 'outlook.exe and /safe' switch can also be added. For this, you will have to determine the location of outlook.exe which is generally found at below mentioned location;

Go to Desktop and right-click on empty space available.
Select New>>Shortcut to create new shortcut for Outlook.
Here, type path where outlook.exe is located to the tab provided or browse the location through Browse button.
Now type space and /safe: ' /safe'
It will appear like: 'C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice14OUTLOOK.EXE' /safe
Click Next and name this shortcut.
Then click Finish.

User can open the Outlook application by clicking this new shortcut created directly. MS Outlook application in safe mode will be opened without any additional add-on files or plug-ins if such files or add-ons are causing troubles in Outlook application. In case the Outlook application still shows errors (like Outlook not working in safe mode) or issues with its execution, it indicates that the problem lies with the storage file. In such situation, it is recommended to recover data from the PST file in another fresh PST file using third party applications like Outlook Recovery. Keygen para ableton 10.
