• Option #2: GlobalProtect official client. Palo Alto Networks provides a GlobalProtect app for Linux in two versions: a command line interface (CLI) version and a graphical user interface (GUI) version. Ideally, the package or installer should be provided to you by the organization’s network administrator or IT staff.
  • Issue: Duo Prompt is Blank. When you hit Connect, you can sign in with your NetID and password, but the Duo prompt appears to be blank. This issue applies to Windows 10 users who have the GlobalProtect VPN client installed on their machine. GlobalProtect uses Internet Explorer 11 to pull up a login screen using JavaScript.
  • Basically, the steps are as follows. Configure your Global Protect Client for a Customer. Connect Global Protect. On the interface, click “Capture”. Your configured Global Protect profile will be captured, ready for use. Right click and switch between your captured Global Protect portals, or load from the main interface.
  • However, I have recently extended the fantastic open-source VPN client OpenConnect to support the PAN GlobalProtect VPN, both in its SSL-VPN and IPsec/ESP modes. It acts just like a native client and you can run it from the command line in a fully automated manner.

VPN provides you with secure access to University services and the Internet when you are off-campus. Northwestern is transitioning to a new VPN platform called GlobalProtect. GlobalProtect replaces three existing VPN clients: built-in VPN clients, Cisco AnyConnect, and Pulse Secure SSL VPN. For details on the transition, see https://www.it.northwestern.edu/about/it-projects/vpn-migration-2019/overview.html. Please note that if you are a member of the Feinberg School of Medicine, you will continue to use your built-in VPN client.
The portal address for GlobalProtect is vpn-connect.northwestern.edu.
GlobalProtect requires you to authenticate with your NetID and NetID password and Duo multi-factor authentication. If you need to register a phone for multi-factor authentication, see Registering and managing your devices for Duo multi-factor authentication.
