Bio (Main Verse)
Sans and his brother were made in a lab by W. D. Gaster, grown from his own metacarpals as part of his research into souls. His goal was to artificially craft souls that could be used to break the barrier and allow the monsters to escape to the human world. This incarnation of Gaster was a Badster who didn’t start wishing he’d been a Dadster until it was too late. He experimented on Sans and Papyrus in an effort to either make their souls as sturdy as human souls. When he found difficulty with this he instead sought to detach them from the laws governing timelines. During this time Gaster avoided attachment with his creations and generally felt that choosing any kind of mercy or compassion in his experiments would mean risking his own heart and sacrificing the future of monster kind in exchange.
In general Sans was born frail, prone to passing out, highly intelligent, and with a tendency toward a subject view of morality. Papyrus by contrast grew hardy and strong, excitable and optimistic, with a very strict objective sense of right and wrong. They frequently disagreed on whether or not to love and trust Gaster, the only adult in their life. In this timeline Gaster is eventually killed by Sans who jumps on the completely accidental opportunity to send him plummeting into the Core. The Core erased W.D. Gaster from existence, leaving a young Sans and Papyrus alone in the world, unsure of how they got there or where they were going.
Sans and Papyrus don’t particularly recall where they came from or what happened to them. The specter of Gaster haunts their home and Sans knows it has something to do with all the books and papers he’s been reading and the weird machine that sits behind the house. Sans came out of the experimentation with the ability to see himself in past or future parts of his timeline. At first it came up by accident. As he grew older and gained some control over this ability, he learned he could manipulate his timeline and even visit alternate realities, not unlike the player.
Generally speaking what Sans does remember about Gaster makes him really hate the guy, and the more times he’s forced to kill the player, the more afraid Sans is that the easier it will become to keep doing it. His biggest fear is becoming merciless like Doctor Gaster or like Chara because of what he feels he has to do to protect everyone.
Sans considers Papyrus his reason for doing basically anything. He took care of his brother from a young age and took on as many odd jobs as he could find to support them and give Papyrus opportunities. They have a somewhat codependent relationship and he does what he can to shield Papyrus from remembering the things he’s starting to remember.
